There may be an honest-to-goodness whodunnit unfolding at Medicis Pharmaceutical, where the nude body of the 32-year-old, live-in girlfriend of Jonah Shacknai, who runs the drugmaker, was found yesterday at his seaside home in Coronado, California. She has since been identified as Rebecca Nalepa and his brother found her hanging by her neck from a courtyard balcony with her hands and feet bound, according to authorities.

“We are not ready to determine if this was a suicide or a criminal act,” Capt. Tim Curran of the San Diego Country Sheriff’s Department tells The Los Angeles Times, adding that Adam Shacknai is considered a witness, not a suspect or a “person of interest.”

The mystery began yesterday morning when Coronado Police received a call that a woman at the home of the millionaire may have been dead, although the initial report indicated she was in distress. The only people at the 27-room mansion at the time were Nalepa and Adam Shacknai, who called police, according to Curran.

Jonah Shacknai and his ex-wife were reportedly at a local hospital at the bedside of their 6-year-old son, who was seriously injured Monday in a fall at the mansion. Police say they have not found a link between the child’s injury and the death of the 32-year-old woman.

Shacknai, 54, founded the company in 1988 and is the chairman. He held 904,214 shares of Medicis stock as of May 19, amounting to about $35 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News. Medicis shares are down more than 4 percent today on nearly 10 times the average trading volume. You can watch him chat about leadership here.
