Teen shot at Bothell FDA lab released from custody

A teenage boy who was shot in the foot after he allegedly drove a car into a contract security guard at the Food and Drug Administration lab in Bothell on Feb. 8 is out of juvenile detention, according to Snohomish County prosecuting attorneys.
He has not been charged with a crime in connection with the incident and prosecutors said they will wait until an investigation into the shooting has been completed by the Snohomish Multi-Agency Response Team before making a charging decision.
According to Bothell police, the boy was shot around 7 a.m. after he was confronted by two armed guards who provide security to the FDA lab through a contract with the Homeland Security’s Federal Protective Service.
Police said the guards first reported that they were contacting a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot. The guards said the teen fled, then returned for the car and hit at least one of them while he was backing up, according to police. At least one of the guards fired, striking the boy in the foot, according to Shari Ireton, a spokeswoman for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
The 15-year-old then drove away, got into a separate hit-and-run accident and drove home, police said. He was tracked down via information on the vehicle relayed by the guards, police said.
The teen, who was a student at Secondary Academy for Success, an alternative high school near cthe FDA building, was taken into custody and booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center on investigation of second-degree assault on Friday.
Officials have not yet said whether both guards fired their weapons, how many shots were fired, nor why the teen was driving a car.
