Merck staff mull further strike action

Merck Serono’s employees will meet this evening to discuss whether or not to strike tomorrow.

The strike would be to protest plans to close the biotech firm’s Geneva headquarters.

Five-hundred jobs could go in the process with around 750 relocated.

Momentum has been gathering since the announcement was made two months ago that over 1,000 Geneva-based jobs could go.

Four hundred employees turned out in force to march against that yesterday.

They were joined by worker’s union Unia and cantonal politicians from the left wing.

Personnel have handed in three alternatives to complete closure—the focal point is spin-offs or start-ups.

Fifteen-thousand people have signed a petition against the closure of the Geneva headquarters.

Staff representatives will deliver that to Bern on Wednesday.
